CSSM – Certified Surgical Services Manager

The Certified Surgical Services Manager (CSSM) certification program is for perioperative leaders interested in improving and validating their managerial knowledge and skills so as to advance the performance of their surgical services department.

CSSM certification validates the achievement of the baccalaureate prepared manager who demonstrates current proficiency as an administrator in the perioperative (pre-, intra-, and post-operative) setting.

CCI is developing and delivering the CSSM exam to recognize the important role managers have in directing staff, programs and budgets in delivering  safe patient care. The purpose of the CSSM exam is to provide recognition for the important and distinct role of surgical services managers.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to apply for the CSSM exam, candidates must meet the following requirements at the time of application. However, candidates do NOT need to be CNOR certified to sit for CSSM exam.

Also, candidates do NOT have to have "manager" in their title. The CSSM credentialing program is for those who are in a management role.  That is to say, they oversee personnel, and/or a budget, business unit and/or service line. Professionals with the following titles are all eligible to take the exam: director, assistant director, manager, assistant manager, supervisor, coordinator, team leader, service line leader or charge nurse, among others.

Academic Coursework within the Past Two Years
CNOR Certified RN BA/BS Minimum of 2 years and 2,400 hours of surgical services management experience 6 hours of domain-specific content
Non-CNOR Certified RN BA/BS Minimum of 4 years and 4,800 hours of surgical services management experience 12 hours of domain-specific content

RN License: Hold a current, unrestricted RN license.

Academic Degree: Hold a Bachelor’s degree either in Arts or Science (transcript will be required if audited).

Employment:  Be currently employed (either full-time or part-time) and have a minimum of two or four years’ experience in a surgical services management role depending on CNOR certification status. Work experience in a non-paid, volunteer capacity is acceptable. 

Perioperative Management Coursework:  Have completed a minimum of 30 or 50 continuing education contact hours depending on CNOR certification status in the two years prior to application. Coursework must be in one or more of the subject areas covered on the CSSM exam:

  1. Strategic Management
  2. Operational Management
  3. Financial Management
  4. Leadership
  5. Professionalism
  6. Communication & Relationship Management
  7. Human Resource Management

CME Credits

You may submit Physician Category 1 or AMA PRA Category 1 credits to fulfill coursework requirement. These credits are considered CMEs (continuing medical education).

CME credits convert into contact hours using the following ANCC conversion: 1 CME credit = 1 contact hour.
