Module Learning Objectives

The Certificate Program for Surgical Services Educators focuses on developing and refining skills that are essential to the educator role. The program is designed to enhance a participant’s knowledge and ability to function in the educator role, regardless of his or her experience level.  Applicants who successfully complete the online multiple-choice post-tests for all modules will receive a certificate of mastery and contact hours.

Module 1: Leadership and Organizational Behaviors, 1.8 contact hours

At the end of this module, the participant will have the knowledge and skills to:
  • Examine the impact organizational structure has on the perioperative nurse educator role. 
  • Choose the most effective leadership style based on the situation encountered.
  • Identify attributes of the successful nurse educator.

Module 2: Teaching/Learning Principles, 1.5 contact hours

At the end of this module, the participant will have the knowledge and skills to:
  •  Describe three learner styles.
  •  Describe the three domains of learning around which teaching strategies are developed.
  • Evaluate the merits of selected teaching strategies.
  • Identify techniques that faciliate adult learning.  

Module 3: Instructional Design, 1.5 contact hours

At the end of this module, the participant will have the knowledge and skills to:
  • Develop the components of an effective teaching outline.  
  • Construct behavioral objectives that reflect measurable achievement of designated outcomes.
  • Employ teaching methods that address varied learning styles.

Module 4: Evaluations and Outcomes, 1.6 contact hours

At the end of this module, the participant will have the knowledge and skills to:
  • Define the term "evaluation".
  • Discuss the evaluation process.
  • Select the appropriate evaluatioon tool based on desired outcomes.
  • Develop test questions that accurately measure outcomes.

Module 5: Staff Development, 1.8 contact hours

At the end of this module, the participant will have the knowledge and skills to:
  • Develop an orientation plan for perioperative staff with varying degrees of experience.
  • Support professional growth of staff through development of quality educational offerings.
  • Design a competency plan that meets regulatory requirements.

Module 6: Facilitation and Collaboration, 1.5 contact hours

At the end of this module, the participant will have the knowledge and skills to:
  • Appraise the relationship between facilitation and collaboration.
  • Identify key attributes of a successful facilitator.
  • Describe strategies for developing a collaborative relationship.

Module 7: Creating a Culture of Evidence-Based Practice, 1.6 contact hours

At the end of this module, the participant will have the knowledge and skills to:
  • Evaluate the components of a research article.
  • Differentiate between qualitative and quantitative studies.
  • Design opportunities to bring evidence-based practice to the unit.
